Banff Centre for Arts & Creativity - Leighton Artist Studios Residency

In October 2018 a two week residency at the wonderful Banff Centre as part of their Leighton Artist Studios Program It was the first time the three of us had written together and we are excited about this new group of songs.

Kim had a terrific idea - writing songs based around a theme. We mulled it over some and decided to write songs inspired by the photos of Dorothea Lange. Dorothea is known for her wonderful photographs of the folks who left their wind and dust ravaged farms in the area known as No Man's Land (the Oklahoma Panhandle) in the 1930's. The photos we based the songs around include "Migrant Mother", "Tractored Out", "First Car", a story about a two year old little girl Rena Marie who died from "dust pneumonia", and another of Dorothea's photos "On the Road".

Our residency was highly successful and we are honoured to have had this opportunity.

Its Root, Hoe or Die

We are honoured to have been awarded a Leighton Artist Residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity this past October 2018. The following songs were written during this residency and are based on Dorothea Lange's photographic documentation of the dustbowl migration of the 1930's.
